Conclusion, Final Thoughs of the Neighborhood Portfolio

Conclusion for Population & Migration

Herndon is a good place with good people, many things to do, a fairly sized park in the middle of neighborhoods. I have to be careful sometimes at night as some crimes occur and sometimes people break car windows. A community center nearby, and overall most of the people here are good. Some people move away due to certain factors, but for the most part people are here to live here permanently.

I do see some police presence here. There are a lot more parking tickets now, and I would say it is slightly dangerous to walk around alone at 12am.

A normal place with medium sized family homes, not too noisy. Many things to do – there is a pool, park in my neighborhood, and near the community center there is another nicer park, golf course, tennis court, basketball, baseball, and soccer court. Many people come together to enjoy the 4th of July, and we used to have a Herndon festival which I loved as a kid, but now they stopped doing that, so that is one sad thing that happened.

Conclusion for Language & Ethnicity

By walking around and reflecting on my past growing up here, I was able to see more of the diversity this neighborhood has. Without this field trip I don't think I would have looked at all the houses, decorations, religious objects, flags on homes, and how for me this is normal — hanging out with other ethnicities and being connected regardless of ethnicity.

Conclusion for Religion

I could not find any other religious buildings or signs during my walk. It was mainly the big churches that I was able to find and explore, although I did see an Arabic language center where you can go if you want to learn. I also saw an Islamic center on Google Maps close by.

Conclusion for Political Geography

I learned more about monuments and the political landscape of Herndon and places that you can go to vote. I never visited the Mayor's office/council meeting place so that was a nice walk to see it.

Conclusion for Urban Environment

Herndon lives in Fairfax County which is one of the very wealthy counties and it invests the money they gain in some events and services for schools, education, health, and events for the community and you can see that in the environment. Compared to other neighborhoods in different towns from experience of visiting close family and friends, Herndon is one of the only towns with this urban environment.

Walking around and thinking about other towns and neighborhoods made me appreciate Herndon's many urban environments, and how these activities connect the neighborhoods.

Final Reflections – What I Learned Walking This Neighborhood

I always love to explore and walk around places, and I am glad I was able to look more around my neighborhood and the town of Herndon, seeing all the differences in homes and even the trees are different from neighborhood to neighborhood.

I didn't know that the bike trail goes very far. I made it to the end but just saw some sort of power plant and a bunch of cars going by fast. I learned that the people who work at the 7/11 are all family and friends, and that was nice to see. I found random shops while wandering around near the library. Surprisingly, I even found a small anime shop, which was interesting.

Thank You

This field trip made me understand where I grew up more. I enjoyed it and I hope you enjoyed reading about my neighborhood.
