Migration in Herndon
In Herndon where I live and from the county experience, there are many Hispanics that live and have migrated here. According to this Data USA profile for Herndon, I found that the most common origin is El Salvador. This is very interesting to me because my family is also from El Salvador. India and Mexico are the next most common origins. The Hispanic population also makes up 38.9% of Herndon.
I believe that the reason for this is because of the gang violence and civil wars across South America and mainly El Salvador led to us migrating into Virginia. My speculation is that the first migrators from El Salvador decided to settle in Virginia near Herndon, so then families and friends that also migrated went to the same areas. The reason I think this is because my mother also moved here because of family being able to help.
Now that I think about it, all of the friends that I made and still talk to today are also from El Salvador too and frequently visit the country now.

Herndon is a very nice place to walk during good weather. It took 30-60 minutes to go to most of the places seen in these pictures, with 5 minutes to walk to the community center which is near the golf course.
My experience with some of the Herndon Population
This community has a permanent based living, but I do see people moving homes from time to time. Some of my close friends moved also. Many of the people here work close by, and finding a parking spot as it gets to 6pm becomes a nightmare.
I see many different demographics. My neighbors are white and across the street is Black. Many of the neighbors are Hispanic, some of them from El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala. Some Arabics too. My best friend that moved away was also Arabic. Further away in the bigger homes still in Herndon, I mostly see a white demographic compared to where I live in townhomes. There is also this big house complex where my mom works for someone who lives there, and it is a very nice home with 3 stories.
When I was in elementary school, I went to this Native American tribe history museum. This is relevant because before Europeans settled here, this was the home of Native American tribes and they used this region for hunting and fishing. When European colonists in the 17th and 18th century came, it transformed the landscape through farming and trade center. In 1858, Herndon was named after Captain William Lewis Herndon. Later on in the 20th century, Herndon became a part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan expansion, leading to a diverse population and affecting the workforce.
Who lives here and why: My family lives in a townhouse – a medium small sized kitchen and living room, 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, 2 stories with a small cramped attic. Across my street used to live a drug seller, and further down the street the cops busted a house that some criminal hid in. That was around 2 years ago; things are calmer now thankfully. We live near a community center but slightly hidden from it, and there are 2 parks for children to play in. Most people here are here to live permanently. Further down the road you will find bigger homes that are more divided in space. Most of the people in the townhomes are Hispanic. There is a 7/11 if you follow the bike trail, and the workers there are from India. Near the library, which is about a 10 minute walk the opposite direction of the community center, there are small shops and cool places to look at.
Here are some photo's of how some of the neighborhoods here look like
There are some houses that are lucky and have basements, and there are some who have a very small backyard and very little lawn space. Most of the houses are really next to each other, so sometimes you can hear your neighbor, but it is not super bad.
So what are some of the reasons you may want to live or not live in Herndon?
In my experience
Good weather. There is a pool and a park nearby for people to go to. Good place to travel to work and close enough to walk around and explore.
The community is distant. Neighbors are good people, parents and friends that live here visit sometimes and bring food. Some houses are divided and hidden.
Here are some things you may want to think about too
Small home for a big family. Crimes happen but once a blue moon. You need a car to travel further away, but there is a bus stop close by you can use. Sometimes a lot of snow.
It is in the middle of nowhere – not everyone likes being this secluded.
Conclusion of this field trip
Herndon is a good place with good people, many things to do, a fairly sized park in the middle of neighborhoods. I have to be careful sometimes at night as some crimes occur and sometimes people break car windows. A community center nearby, and overall most of the people here are good. Some people move away due to certain factors, but for the most part people are here to live here permanently.
I do see some police presence here. There are a lot more parking tickets now, and I would say it is slightly dangerous to walk around alone at 12am.
Takeaways, A normal place with medium sized family homes, not too noisy. Many things to do – there is a pool, park in my neighborhood, and near the community center there is another nicer park, golf course, tennis court, basketball, baseball, and soccer court. Many people come together to enjoy the 4th of July, and we used to have a Herndon festival which I loved as a kid, but now they stopped doing that, so that is one sad thing that happened.
I always love to explore and walk around places, and I am glad I was able to look more around my neighborhood and the town of Herndon, seeing all the differences in homes and even the trees are different from neighborhood to neighborhood.
What I learned walking this neighborhood, I didn't know that the bike trail goes very far. I made it to the end but just saw some sort of power plant and a bunch of cars going by fast. I learned that the people who work at the 7/11 are all family and friends, and that was nice to see. I found random shops while wandering around near the library. Surprisingly, I even found a small anime shop, which was interesting.
